Why The Farm

The Farm in Galong Ltd was formed to address particular aspects of the problem of drug abuse in the community. Two things were of specific concern and became the focus of the group’s planning: recidivism and the effects of drug use on the user’s family.

One particularly tragic effect is the removal of children from their parents.  They believed that a place was needed that provided care for people seeking permanent recovery from substance abuse through the development of constructive and meaningful habits of life. They also felt there was a gap in the provision of women only services to address their specific needs, especially those connected to inter-personal trauma and the removal of their children.

In 2017 the group was offered a convent on three hectares in a beautiful rural setting to use as a rehabilitation facility for women. The site is ideal for the program, offering residents a quiet and secluded environment away from the pressures of modern urban life.

  • Thank you to all the staff for their support!

“Being at The Farm was a time to heal and be clear of mind in order to self-regulate behaviours and adopt new positive routines for a healthier lifestyle. I was able to gain new employment for my return home. Thank you to all the staff for their support”

  • Do what you can, with what you have...

“Working out in the garden, growing our own veggies, learning to budget wisely and learning “to do what you can, with what you have.” This helped me to become simple and content, learning to not want material things and not to stress about things of no importance at all.”

  • Learning to be proud of yourself...again.

“My time at The Farm was warm and welcoming. I spent three months at The Farm and during that time I studied my Certificate III in Community Services and successfully completed it. If there was one thing I enjoyed the most (it is hard to choose one!) it would be the time you get to focus on yourself and learning to be proud of yourself again and the close bond you make with the people there.”

  • I'm back home now...

“I’m back home now with my two kids and family and couldn’t be happier. I am thankful for my time at The Farm. Without the help from the staff and clients, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

  • Feels like home.

The farm is a safe place it is isolated away from all chaos it has a feel of home and amazing staff.

  • Kept my son.

The Farm supported me with my children and also helped me keep custody of my son. We came from the hospital to straight there.

  • Challenged, healed.

My journey at the Farm was something that has left a mark on me for the rest of my life, at times it challenged me, it helped heal me in ways that I never thought where possible for that I am grateful for the farm and the experience I have had.

  • Real change.

Compared to other rehabs I have been to this one actually really made a difference.

  • My life is really changed!

The skills and knowledge I learnt really helped change my life, the Farm addressed the behaviours that I was struggling with most of my life, it helped me with emotion regulation, to heal my trauma and poor impulse control.

  • Taught me patience.

It taught me one day at a time also to cope with things as they come and to sit still more patiently.

  • New outlook!

Now I am doing well and I have a positive future ahead!

  • The Therapeutic Community

A Therapeutic Community is a treatment facility in which the community itself, through self-help and mutual support, is the principal means for promoting personal change.

  • The Client Program

The Program for our clients consists of a daily routine of education and training that is phased and supervised. There are also household tasks such as washing, cooking meals on a roster system, and cleaning and taking care of the building, grounds, animals, and plants. As clients progress through the program, they take on increasing amounts of responsibility as their capacities and strength increase. Caseworkers, a psychologist, a visiting medical officer and a dentist provide support, as well as a House Care Supervisor, Groundsman, tutor and other volunteers and workers. Exercise and good nutrition, as well as spiritual reflective practice and meditation also form part of the Program.

“I realised the range and depth of their needs were so complex that visiting them was not enough, I needed to live with them…they needed care and support to address many difficult life situations, especially those connected to interpersonal trauma, including the removal of their children.”
